FAQs

1-2-1 sessions with qualified teachers can significantly improve children's attitudes toward reading and learning, providing the confidence needed for school. Many children find the curriculum too abstract and not accommodating to their learning differences. They may benefit from multi-sensory methods and tailored strategies often unavailable in schools. Additionally, the fast-paced nature of lessons may not allow enough time for consolidating early reading skills. Specialist teachers identify learning gaps and work at the child's pace, ensuring they are ready to progress. We adapt to their needs, addressing issues as they arise and understanding each child's unique requirements from a teacher.

Why Specialist Teaching is important?

Specialist Teachers are made for children who need a little bit more than most schools are able to offer.

Who do I work with?

I am qualified to work with any primary-age child or secondary-age child who is working within primary levels.

Do you offer sessions online?

I am predominantly a face-to-face tutor and believe that most children are better able to learn with a face-to-face learning experience. However, in exceptional circumstances where children are unable to leave the house, then online teaching could be adopted.

Do you offer group sessions?

No. At the moment, I only offer 1-2-1 spaces or paired teaching. The pairs are carefully matched according to their learning strengths and challenges and age.

Could you come to our house?

I predominantly work with children from my cabin in Waterlooville. I come to the home of the student in the event of a significant mobility issue where the student is unable to travel. In this instance, there would be travel costs to pay in addition to session fees.

Would you go to my child's school?

I am able to travel to local schools in order to deliver a session while the child is at school. This needs to be agreed between the SENCo and myself that this session would be in the best interest of the child. In this instance, there would be travel costs to pay in addition to session fees.

Do you work with Home Education families during the day?

Yes, I have the capacity to support Home Educated families during the day. Please reach out for availability, and to find out if I am the right teacher for you.

How quickly can I expect progress?

This is a really hard one to answer and it depends very much on how many gaps in their knowledge are identified, how secure the early reading and writing foundations are, and how quickly a teaching rapport can be formed. Some children you will see progress within 6 regular sessions, while others may take a little longer.

I can't commit to lessons every week. Is there an alternative?

Some of my regular customers prefer to do sessions every other week, as it is more manageable for them. Progress may be a little slower than for the weekly students, but once the early reading/ writing foundations are in place, progress will still be notable.

Do you offer SATs tutoring?

My speciality is working with children who are struggling readers and spellers. Quite often I will continue with clients through their SATs if they have been established customers for some time, to continue to build their confidence with reading and writing. However I am unable to guarantee particular results and in some cases, the priority for the child is to continue to support them to learn to read rather than to pass a test. If you are looking for a pure SATs tutor I am probably not the tutor for you.

Do you do 11+ tutoring?

I have supported clients through the 11+ if they are hoping to be awarded a place at a Specialist Dyslexia School, such as The Gregg School. However, generally speaking, if you are looking for a 11+ tutor, I am probably not the tutor for you, unless your child has significant barriers to learning in reading/ writing.
